![]() 50 Years of Pinecrest History Connecting a precious heritage with a promising future
Listed below is a Brief History of the origin of Pinecrest Baptist Church July, 1953 – Religious Census , taken by Portsmouth Baptist Association to determine the need for a Baptist mission. October, 1953 – Revival Meeting was held by different local Baptist pastors. May 23, 1954 – West End Baptist Mission was organized/sponsored by the Portsmouth Baptist Association and “mothered” by the June 17, 1956 – West End Baptist Mission was constituted. The name was changed to December 27, 1959 – First worship service in the new building. Dr. M. G. Robertson served as interim pastor in 1962. The Rev. Carl Flick began his ministry at Pinecrest in 1963 and served until 1967 when he entered the U. S. Navy. The Flicks were the first pastoral family to live in the parsonage. July 27, 1963 – Parsonage was purchased at 213 Charlotte Drive June 12, 1966 – Tenth Anniversary Service - Dr. Lucius Polhill, Executive Secretary of the Virginia Baptist General Association, 1 was the speaker. The Rev. James Woodland served as pastor from March 16, 1967 to May 6, 1973. June 20, 1971 – Fifteenth Anniversary Service – U.S. Naval Chaplain Lt. Carl Flick, former pastor of Pinecrest, was the speaker. The Rev. Vergil Hudson served as pastor from January 1, 1974 until he retired on June 30, 1982. June 6, 1976 – Homecoming and Twentieth Anniversary Service -Dr. Clayton Pitts, retired pastor of the June 10, 1979 – Ground Breaking Ceremony for Pinecrest Hall. May 31, 1981 – Building Dedication/Homecoming Service – Dr. Richard Stevenson, Executive Director of the Virginia Baptist General Board, was the speaker. The Rev. William B. Pittard, Jr. was interim pastor from 1982 to 1983. The Rev. Stanley Stones was called as pastor June 19, 1983 and served until June 30, 1986. October 10, 1985 – Homecoming Service - Rev. James Woodland, former pastor of Pinecrest, was the speaker. The Rev. B. Thomas Potter began his ministry at Pinecrest as interim pastor September 1, 1986 and was called to serve as pastor November 1, 1986. May 29, 1988 – Church sign and flag on the corner of Mimosa and Felton Roads was dedicated. November 6, 1988 – Homecoming Service - Rev. Vergil Hudson, former pastor of Pinecrest, was the speaker. December 1990 – Building connecting the church to Pinecrest Hall was completed. The unit included a library, restrooms, and a storage room. November 1994 – Purchased a 60 x 225 lot adjacent to the church property. November 8, 1995 – Feasibility study for a new sanctuary was presented to the church. Church voted to enter the design phase. September 15, 1996 – Special called business meeting, church voted to approve new sanctuary. July 27, 1997 – Ground breaking for new sanctuary. December, 1998 – Dedication of the new sanctuary. Additional parking space was added. The Rev. Jeff Hall served as Youth Pastor from February 1999/ Associate Pastor from January 2000 until June 4, 2006 to begin a new ministry in June 1999 – The "Tree of Life" was placed in the foyer of the new sanctuary. Each leaf has been given in honor or memory of loved ones and friends. January 2000 – Renovation of the old sanctuary into Sunday School classes and church offices was completed. July 2000 – A mission team was sent to March 2001 – Voted to unite with the Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia. April 2001 – Two church vans were purchased. Began radio ministry with 670 AM, WRJR. June 17, 2001 – Celebrated 45th Anniversary. August 2001 – John Garner was hired as part-time Music Director. October 2001 – Celebrated Pastor Potter's 15th Anniversary with Pinecrest. April 2002 – Began radio ministry with station 1490 AM. August 2002 – Steve Bingham began his ministry as Senior Adult Pastor. March 2003 – Breezeway was added to connect the kitchen to the garage. April 2003 – A new vision statement "A growing, sharing, loving, caring church reaching out to today's world in God's way" was adopted. A mission statement was adopted, " May 2003 – Completed remodeling of kitchen. May 2003 – The "Fountain of Life" was installed under the overhang outside the sanctuary. This fountain represents all who have won the ultimate victory over cancer. July 2003 – Michael Cox began his ministry as full-time Minister of Education. July 2003 – Purchased a van that is handicapped equipped. September 2004 - Adopted the joint partnership agreement with the International Mission Board ministry in February 2005 – Purchased a 49-passenger motor coach. June 2005 – Renovation of children's classrooms and new furniture. June 2005 – The Edith B. Mitchell Scholarship Fund was established, funded by an Endowment Fund received from the estate of Edith Mitchell. The recipients of the first scholarships were Kourtney Ragland and Shelley Myrick. July 2005 – Michael Cox was ordained into full-time Christian ministry. February 2006 – Beth Smith began as full-time Director of Children's Ministry. June 18, 2006 – Celebrated 50th Anniversary.
